What Are "Non-Essential" Imports? FAQ

We've been getting a lot of questions lately about how priority shipping, logistics, and importing works right now during COVID19, so this post should answer some questions.

McKenzie Pickups operates just in Ontario, Canada, so we abide by the same rules as every shipping & pickup company here.  This includes UPS, Fedex, Canada Post, DHL, Canpar, and any other mail/parcel company.  The rules are set by the government and are regulated on the entire process.

Earlier this year in 2021, Doug Ford (The Premier of Ontario) announced that certain types of imports will take priority over others.  These are what is known as "essential imports".  Such things are medication, food, medical supplies, and emergency type items.

Import brokers and companies that handle clearance of your items that come into Canada are required to make room for essential products first if your item is classified as non-essential.  (Non-essential examples are toys, games, fitness items, furniture, computer items, electronics, beauty items, etc.)  This means that they can be working on your import, but may need to stop for a few days or a week to change and work on something else with a higher priority before resuming work back on yours later.

What we have seen over the past few months is that many of peoples imported items that have multiple boxes are getting their boxes cleared separately.  So for someone with 20-30 boxes in their import, we may receive 4-5 boxes a week until the whole thing is cleared.

We anticipate for things to go back to normal sometime in early 2022.
